Save Thousands on Gastric Sleeve Surgery - Without Compromising Quality
Many UK patients face 2-5 year NHS waiting lists or £8,000+ private fees. At NewMe Health Clinic in Antalya, you'll receive world-class care at a fraction of the cost and without the wait.
The Reality of Weight Loss Surgery in the UK
If you're considering weight loss surgery, you've probably discovered that getting treatment through the NHS can mean waiting years not months. Many of our patients come to us after being told they face a 2 to 5 year wait for bariatric surgery on the NHS, or after receiving quotes of £8,000 to £12,000 from private UK clinics.
Turkey has become Europe's leading destination for medical tourism, and for good reason. At NewMe Health Clinic in Antalya, we offer the same quality of care you'd expect from a top UK private hospital, but at a fraction of the cost — and without the lengthy waiting times.
Every year, thousands of British patients travel to Turkey for weight loss surgery. They're not compromising on quality — they're making a smart choice that saves them money while getting faster access to life-changing treatment.

What Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is one of the most effective and popular weight loss procedures available today. It works by permanently reducing the size of your stomach, which limits how much food you can eat and naturally reduces hunger.
A Life-Changing Procedure
During gastric sleeve surgery, approximately 80% of your stomach is removed, leaving a narrow tube or "sleeve" roughly the size and shape of a banana. This isn't just about eating less it fundamentally changes your relationship with food.
The removed portion of the stomach contains most of the cells that produce ghrelin, the "hunger hormone." This means that after surgery, most patients experience significantly reduced hunger and fewer cravings making it much easier to stick to a healthy diet.
Unlike gastric bypass surgery, the sleeve gastrectomy doesn't reroute your intestines, meaning you absorb nutrients normally. This results in fewer nutritional deficiencies and a simpler long-term supplement regimen.
The result? You naturally eat less without feeling constantly hungry or deprived. Most patients describe feeling satisfied with much smaller portions and having more control over their eating habits than ever before.

How Gastric Sleeve Works
The sleeve gastrectomy creates a smaller stomach pouch that holds about 100-150ml of food, compared to the original stomach capacity of 1-1.5 litres. This mechanical restriction, combined with hormonal changes, leads to significant and sustainable weight loss.
🍽 You Feel Full Faster
Your new stomach holds about 100-150ml compared to the original 1-1.5 litres. You'll feel satisfied with much smaller portions, naturally reducing your calorie intake without feeling deprived or hungry.
🧠 You Feel Less Hungry
The removed portion of stomach produces most of the ghrelin (hunger hormone). After surgery, patients typically experience significantly reduced appetite and fewer food cravings throughout the day.
💊 Normal Nutrient Absorption
Unlike gastric bypass, the sleeve doesn't reroute your intestines. This means you absorb nutrients normally, with fewer risks of nutritional deficiencies and a simpler supplement routine.
The Procedure: Step by Step
Gastric sleeve surgery is performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery), which means smaller incisions, less pain, faster recovery, and minimal scarring. Here's exactly what happens:
-
1
General Anaesthesia
You'll be given general anaesthesia, so you'll be completely asleep and comfortable throughout the entire procedure. You won't feel or remember anything.
-
2
Small Incisions
Your surgeon makes 4-5 tiny incisions (each less than 1cm) in your abdomen. These small cuts allow the surgical instruments and camera to be inserted with minimal tissue damage.
-
3
Stomach Division
Using a special surgical stapling device, approximately 80% of your stomach is carefully removed. The remaining stomach is shaped into a narrow sleeve, roughly the size of a banana.
-
4
Leak Testing
The new stomach sleeve is tested to ensure it's completely sealed and there are no leaks at the staple line. This is a critical safety step performed in every procedure.
-
5
Closure
The small incisions are closed with dissolvable stitches that don't need to be removed. The entire procedure typically takes 45-60 minutes from start to finish.
Recovery begins immediately: Most patients are walking the same evening and begin taking small sips of water. You'll typically stay in hospital for 3-4 nights before transferring to your hotel to continue recovery.
Gastric Sleeve vs Other Weight Loss Procedures
Not sure which weight loss surgery is right for you? Here's how gastric sleeve compares to other popular bariatric procedures:
| Feature | Gastric Sleeve | Gastric Bypass | Endoscopic Gastric Balloon | Allurion Gastric Balloon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Permanence | Permanent | Permanent | Temporary (6-12 months) | Temporary (4 months) |
| Invasiveness | Moderate (laparoscopic) | Higher (intestinal rerouting) | Minimal (no surgery) | Minimal (no surgery) |
| Expected Weight Loss | 75-80% excess weight | 75-80% excess weight | 10-15% total body weight | 10-15% total body weight |
| Procedure Time | 45-60 minutes | 90-120 minutes | 20-30 minutes | 20-30 minutes |
| Hospital Stay | 3-4 nights | 4-5 nights | Day procedure | Day procedure |
| Malabsorption | No | Yes (vitamins needed) | No | No |
| Reversible | No | Technically possible | Yes (balloon removed) | Yes (balloon removed) |
| Best For | BMI 30-45 | BMI 40+ or severe diabetes | BMI 27-35 | BMI 27-35 |
Our recommendation: For most patients with a BMI between 30 and 45, gastric sleeve offers the ideal balance of effectiveness, safety, and simplicity. It delivers excellent long-term weight loss with lower complication rates than bypass and more substantial results than a balloon. Not sure which is right for you? Our medical team will help you choose during your free consultation.
Am I a Candidate for Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery can be life-changing, but it's not suitable for everyone. Here's how to know if you might be a good candidate for this procedure.
BMI Requirements
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the primary criterion for weight loss surgery eligibility. In Turkey, the requirements are often more flexible than NHS guidelines, making treatment accessible to more patients who could benefit:
| BMI Range | NHS Eligibility | NewMe Turkey |
|---|---|---|
| BMI 27-29.9 | Not eligible | Not eligible |
| BMI 30-34.9 | Usually not eligible | Case-by-case basis |
| BMI 35-39.9 | With comorbidities only | Not eligiblee |
| BMI 40+ | Not eligible | Not eligible |
Ideal Candidates
You may be a good candidate for gastric sleeve surgery if you meet the following criteria:
- Have a BMI of 30 or above (or 27+ with obesity-related health conditions)
- Have tried diet and exercise programs without achieving lasting success
- Are between 18 and 65 years old (exceptions may apply)
- Don't have medical conditions that make surgery too risky
- Are committed to making permanent lifestyle changes after surgery
- Have realistic expectations about the results and recovery process
- Are psychologically prepared for the changes surgery will bring

- ✕ Have certain gastrointestinal conditions (e.g., severe GERD, Barrett's oesophagus)
- ✕ Have untreated or unstable mental health conditions
- ✕ Have active substance abuse issues (alcohol, drugs)

What Results Can You Expect?
Gastric sleeve surgery delivers significant, lasting weight loss for most patients. Here's what you can realistically expect in terms of weight loss and health improvements.
Weight Loss Timeline
Weight loss after gastric sleeve surgery follows a predictable pattern. Most patients see rapid initial loss that gradually slows as they approach their goal weight.
| Timeframe | Typical Weight Loss |
|---|---|
| 2 weeks | 5-8 kg |
| 1 month | 10-15 kg |
| 3 months | 20-30 kg |
| 6 months | 35-45 kg |
| 12 months | 50-65 kg |
| 18-24 months | 60-70% excess weight |
Real Example
If you weigh 120kg and your ideal weight is 70kg, you have 50kg of "excess weight." At 60-70% loss, you could expect to lose 30-35kg, bringing you to approximately 85-90kg within 18-24 months.
Health Improvements
Weight loss is just the beginning. Many patients experience dramatic improvements in obesity-related health conditions, often reducing or eliminating medications.
Many patients reduce or eliminate diabetes medications within weeks
Most patients no longer need CPAP machines after significant weight loss
Reduced or eliminated need for blood pressure medication
Less weight = less stress on joints = improved mobility
Setting Realistic Expectations
While gastric sleeve surgery is highly effective, it's important to understand that it's a tool — not a magic solution. The patients who achieve the best results are those who commit to lasting lifestyle changes.
- Surgery is a tool, not a cure — You'll need to commit to dietary changes and regular exercise for optimal results
- Weight loss varies — Some patients lose more, some less, depending on starting weight, metabolism, diet adherence, and exercise habits
- Plateaus happen — Your weight loss will slow and stall at times; this is completely normal and not a sign of failure
- Loose skin may occur — Significant weight loss can leave excess skin, particularly on the abdomen, arms, and thighs
- Lifelong commitment required — You'll need to take vitamins daily and follow dietary guidelines permanently
Keys to Long-Term Success

Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions
Our all-inclusive gastric sleeve packages start from £2,850 and include surgery, hospital stay, 4-5 star hotel accommodation, all transfers, pre-operative tests, medications, and one year of follow-up care. This compares to £8,000-£12,000 for private surgery in the UK, meaning you save £5,000-£9,000.
Yes, when performed at accredited facilities by qualified surgeons. Our partner hospital holds JCI accreditation — the same international standard used to certify top hospitals worldwide. Our surgical team has performed over 500 successful bariatric procedures with excellent safety records and outcomes.
Most patients lose 60-70% of their excess weight within 18-24 months. For example, if you're 50kg overweight, you might expect to lose 30-35kg. Results vary based on your starting weight, diet adherence, exercise habits, and individual metabolic factors.
The surgery itself typically takes 45-60 minutes. You'll be in the operating theatre for about 90 minutes total, including anaesthesia administration and preparation time. Most patients are walking the same evening and begin taking small sips of water.
No. Gastric sleeve surgery permanently removes approximately 80% of your stomach. Unlike gastric bands or balloons, this procedure cannot be reversed. This is why we ensure every patient fully understands the procedure and is committed to the lifestyle changes required before moving forward.
Gastric sleeve only reduces stomach size, while gastric bypass also reroutes the small intestine. Sleeve is less invasive, has fewer nutritional deficiency risks, and has a shorter surgery time. However, bypass typically results in slightly more weight loss (70-80% vs 60-70% of excess weight) and may be better for patients with severe diabetes. For most patients, gastric sleeve offers the ideal balance of effectiveness and safety.

No. UK passport holders can visit Turkey visa-free for up to 90 days. You just need a valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity. No special documentation or visa application required.
We accept bank transfers (best exchange rates, no fees), credit cards (Visa, Mastercard), and debit cards. A £300 deposit secures your surgery date, with the balance due when you arrive in Turkey. We don't currently offer financing, but many patients use personal loans or 0% interest credit cards.
Absolutely. Many patients bring a partner, family member, or friend for support. Our VIP package includes accommodation for a companion at no extra cost. For Standard and Premium packages, we can arrange additional hotel rooms at discounted rates.
Medical Questions
Generally, a BMI of 30 or above. This is more flexible than NHS criteria (which typically require BMI 35+ with health conditions or 40+). If you're close to BMI 30 with obesity-related health issues like diabetes or sleep apnoea, you may still qualify. Contact us for a free assessment.
Like any surgery, there are risks including bleeding, infection, blood clots, and adverse reactions to anaesthesia. Specific to gastric sleeve, the main risk is staple line leak (occurs in less than 1% of cases with experienced surgeons) and stricture (narrowing). Our surgical team takes extensive precautions including leak testing during surgery to minimise all risks.
Possibly. Significant weight loss can leave excess skin, particularly on the abdomen, arms, thighs, and breasts. The amount depends on your age, skin elasticity, how much weight you lose, how quickly you lose it, and genetics. Many patients choose to have skin removal surgery 12-18 months after their weight stabilises — we also offer these procedures at NewMe Health Clinic.
Yes, but we recommend waiting 12-18 months after surgery to allow your weight to stabilise and ensure proper nutrition before conceiving. Many women find their fertility actually improves after weight loss, especially those with PCOS. Your body needs time to adjust to the changes before supporting a healthy pregnancy.
You'll need daily supplements for life: a high-quality bariatric multivitamin, vitamin B12 (sublingual or injection), iron (especially for menstruating women), calcium citrate with vitamin D, and potentially others based on your blood tests. We provide a complete supplement guide and can recommend UK-available products.
Recovery & Aftercare
Most patients return to desk jobs within 2 weeks. Physical or manual work may require 4-6 weeks of recovery. We provide sick notes for your employer if needed. Listen to your body — some patients feel ready sooner, others need a bit more time.
Your diet progresses through stages: clear liquids (week 1), full liquids including protein shakes (weeks 2-3), pureed foods (weeks 4-5), soft foods (weeks 6-8), then gradually reintroducing regular foods. We provide detailed meal plans for each stage. Long-term, you'll eat normal foods but in much smaller portions, focusing on protein first.
Yes, but these can be done remotely. We offer video consultations at regular intervals during your first year: 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months post-surgery. If any issues arise between appointments, our medical team is available via WhatsApp 24/7. We also recommend you register with a bariatric-friendly GP in the UK for ongoing local support.
Serious complications are rare, but if they occur, you should seek immediate care at your local A&E or GP. Our medical team remains available 24/7 via WhatsApp to advise and can coordinate with your UK doctors. In exceptional circumstances, we can arrange for you to return to Turkey for follow-up care — though this is very rarely necessary.
Gastric sleeve results are permanent — your stomach will not grow back to its original size. However, the stomach can stretch slightly over time if you consistently overeat. Maintaining your weight loss requires lifelong commitment to healthy eating, regular exercise, and mindful portion control. With proper lifestyle choices, most patients maintain significant weight loss for decades.
